Festivals and Events

Lockeport and its surrounding communities play host to a number of festivals and events throughout the calendar year.

2008 Christmas By The Sea:

Sponsored by local merchants, this event will run from December 4th to 7th at various locations throughout Lockeport. Activities for all ages.

Christmas Craft Fair: Saturday December 6th from 10:00 to 3:00 at the Beach Centre
 

Jonathan Roache Memorial Ball Tournament:

This fund raising event was held the weekend of July 11th, 12th & 13th. This event will return next summer, 2009. Come out and support a great cause. All proceeds go towards the Jonathan Roache Memorial Bursary's at Lockeport Regional High School. If you would like to volunteer at this event, please contact Ruth MacIntosh.

Birding Fest:

" Introduction To Birding" was held on Monday, December 10th at the Lillian Benham Library in Lockeport. Special thanks to Donna Crosby, our guest speaker. We hope to have this event return next December.

" Annual Christmas Bird Count" was held on Saturday, December 15th & 16th. Despite the weather, the count was successful with approximately 12 birders covering the area between Port L'Hebert and Lockeport. Total individual species seen during the count period was approximately 80. After the count, most of the birders gathered at the Lockeport Crescent Beach Centre to enjoy hot apple cider, coffee, tea, chili & chowder. This event will return next December.

Lockeport & Area Annual Winter Fest

Will be held each year with activities including a snow sculpture contest, community skate, Friday night pick-up hockey game, crib tournament, "winter" discovery day, youth basketball fun day, ball hockey tournament and a family skate party. Go Fly a Kite Day:

Lockeport's first annual mini kite festival was held on May 3rd,2008 at the Lockeport Crescent Beach Centre. Prizes were awarded through random draws to those who participated. Refreshments including a BBQ were provided. Proceeds went to the LRHS Grade 12 Safe Grad Committee. Watch for the events return in 2009.

Sable River Firemans Funfest:

was held on Saturday September 29th. It began at 10:00am. A variety of activities including craft tables, yard sales, childrens activities and parade as well as a beer garden were among the activities. This event will return next September / October. Come out and enjoy the fun.

Lockeport July 1st Celebrations

Are held during the last week of June through to Canada Day, July 1st. This event has been organized by volunteers and the local Recreation Department for the past fifty years and includes musical entertainment, parades, water sports and culminates with  a fireworks display on the evening of July 1st.

The Harmony Bazaar - Festival of Women and Song

This event is held the last weekend in July with entertainment from all over Nova Scotia including one full day featuring local talent. For more information, please visit http://www.harmonybazaar.com

The Lockeport Sea Derby

This was held from August 9th to the 10th  for the 17th consecutive year. It is organized by a volunteer committee with help from the staff at the Crescent Beach Centre and is open to people of all ages. Random draws in a variety of categories are held during the award ceremonies late Sunday afternoon. Registration and a social for the many participants is held on the Friday evening. Lockeport is home to the largest blue shark ever caught in a Nova Scotia Derby at a dressed weight of over 300 pounds. Visit their website http://www.lockeportseaderby.ca/

Shelburne County Lobsterfest

is held the first weekend in  June to celebrate the completion of another successful lobster season. Communities throughout Shelburne County host suppers and other events including lobster eating contests.

As part of the continuing development of the Lockeport Loop tourism destination area, a number of other initiatives will begin during the next year including a series of Artisan Evenings and exhibits at the Crescent Beach Centre, musical entertainment at the Pavilion and small festivals at Christmas and in the new year .
